PROUTY (For 25-yr. pin to be presented Oct 3, 1969) Given by Asbury Lodge No. 142 Dimited to Ocean Lodge Jan. 7, 1964 Sergent Army Signal Corps in France in W.W. 1 Worked for Newark Star-Eagle Manager Tusting Piano Co. (Long Branch) Organized the music library of radio station WJLK and for three years conducted the "Church by the Sea" program on that station. Worked for Asbury Park Press as reporter, business editor, and performing arts editor. Former President of the Avon Library Board, Avon Men's Club, Board of Trustees of the Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, charter member of the Asb. Park Apollo Club, member of the Manasquan Men's Chorus, Secy. of Avon-Bradley Kiwanis Club in 1953, honoary member of the Asb. Park Lion's Club, retired Jan. 1, 1964. Has one wife, Mabel, and two daughters, Jean and Winifred. Lived in Avon for 47 years.

Note: My mother's parents, Emila and Frederick Birch, came to America from Northampton, England, about 1885. My grandfather was a shoemaker, and when jobs became scarce in England (probably because of the introduction of machinery in the shoe industry) they decided to come to Newark, NJ. My grandmother's sister had already come to this country with her husband, who was also a shoemaker. They came over steerage class, which meant they were in one big room, partitioned off into cubicles, but open at the top and bottom. Grandma used to tell us that she had to bring food for them to eat. She brought a big ham, which somehow dropped to the floor and rolled back and forth until sombody grabbed it. She never got it back. She also brought a fruitcake that she uesd to bribe the steward for favors, milk and the like, for her children. She came with three children, my uncle Fred, who was six at the time, Aunt Clara who was 4, and and Uncle Walter, who was a baby of six months. She taught Uncle Fred to knit on the way over, because it was the only way she could keep a six year old boy quiet. They landed at Castle Garden in New York City. This was the port of immigration that was used before Ellis Island was opened. When they got to Newark, they lived first in a basement apartment in the house where my grandmother's sister lived. Then they rented a house on Bruce Street and finally were able to buy their home at 287 South 7th Street. My Grandfather worked as a shoemaker for Coward Shoes in Newark, known at that time as the Leather Capitol of NJ, until he retired. He made custom shoes for the wealthy women of the area. Each woman has her own last (a wooden model of her shoe size) on file at the company and he would make the shoe she wanted to fit her foot exactly. My mother said he also made shoes for her and her sister, and she hated to go to school with shoes that were different from all the other girls'. When she grew up she realized how special they were. Note: Isaac, son of John, born 1667; was on eof the 40 first settlers of Sunderland, MA; home lot, No. 8, West side, now occupied (1899) by the family of his great-great-grand son, Albert Montague, but he afterwards bought and lived on the Ebenezer March lot no. 9, east side, but retained his homestead on the west side. He was one of the first deacons of the Sunderland church. He married Anna, daughter of Daniel and Mary Warner. She was born November 17, 1669, and died June 26, 1750. Note: From: ENGLAND Hubbard, George, the emigrant, came from England about 1634-35, probably to Watertown, MA, and soon after to Wethersfield, CT, where he was a man of prominence and influence . His name appears on the first page of the CT colony records, in his apointment June 12, 1636, with Samuel Wakeman "to survey the bredth of the plantation of Dorchester, "(Winsor). He surveyed in 1639, the eastern part of Wethersfield ( now Glastonbury) by order of the General Court, by which he was called a "prominent surveyor". He was deputy for Wethersfield in the first "General Assembly" help in 1639. when he was, on one occasion, fined one shilling " for failing at the hower appointed which (is) 7 of the Clocke." He was, also, repeatedly deputy afterwards- and also from Guilford. In May 1670, the court invested him with authority to "joyne persons in marriage." He removed to Milford in 1643, and to Guilford in 1650. In Guilford, he purchased lands of Jacob Sheaffe, on which his descendants were living in 1870. He married Mary, daughter of John and Anne Bishop of Wetersfield and Guildford. She died Sept 14, 1676. He died Jan 1983. The inventory of his estate taken May 30, 1683, 564L 8s 6d. Note: There is a letter of apprenticship that is missing some part, that shows that aaron was aprenticed 10/20/1769. I also have a letter that says: Aaron Hibbard, who wrote the paper of which the within is a fac-simile, was born at Woodstock, CT, Jan. 17, 1761. He went to Bath, NH in 1784 and bought, cleared and settled on the farm that is still held in the family. It is now, 1900, owned and occupied by Charles M. Hibbard, the son of Fredrick Hibbard. Aaron Hibbard was a land surveyor and many farms in Bath and vicinity were first surveyed by him. He was an office in the 32nd Regiment of the New hampshire Militia and was commissioned as Leuitinant Colonel, June 26, 1809. He was married Oct. 14, 1789 to Sarah Merrill, the daughter of Maj Nathaniel and Sarah (Hazen) Merrill of Haverhill, NH. They had fourteen children, thirteen of whom lived to maturity. Mr Hibbard died Feb 12, 1835 and Mrs Hibbard Feb 24, 1842. Their seventh child, Lucius, was born May 29, 1802. He was married - first to Fanny Harvy and second to Mary A. Burnett. he died July 24, 1865. The fac-simile says: This may certify to all to whom it may concern that I Aaron Hibbard now of ... ... in the County of Grafton and State of New Hampshire formally of Woodstock in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut. Invested as Fifer in the Continential Army for the term of three years and served my time out, I enlisted in April in 1777 was discharged in April 1780 at Springfield in the State of New Jersey returned home and that summer after there was an alarm that the British were expected at Bodiesland, the Militia were called out and I went down to East Kingston opposite Newport and stayed about ten or twelve days. The next year 1781 the year that Lord Cornwall was taken I enlisted for Monouth went to West Point and was there till after Wallis was taken --- while in the three years service I was in the Battle at Germantown fifth of Oct 1777 and the Battle at Monmouth 28th day of June 1778 --- and others that were called battles. My captain that I first enlisted under was Josiah Child of Woodstock the Colo that I served under was Philip Bur Braley of Ridgefield in the State of Connecticut when the army went into winter quarters at Valley Forge in the year 77 & 78. Capt Child went home in the spring or summer after and the Luit. who was Elijah Chapman of Toland commanded the company the remainder of the term that I inlisted for.

Note: I have a letter that Grandpa (WAP) had: Norwalk, O. Jan. 21, 1936 Dear Cousins: So glad to hear from you again. I shall be very glad to give you the information you desire --- that is all that is possible. Some dates I do not know and may not be able to find out. For instance the marriages of Aunt May, Uncle Will and Aunt Mari. I will not send the information today however. I must see Cousin Marnie Lutts first to get the dates of her family "history". But thought I better send your Cousin Emma Fairchilds Smith's address so you can send to her for facts concerning that famity if you wish. Cousin Fanny Fairchild was a niece of Grandfather but what her father's name was I do not know. I correspond with Emma, her daughter, but there were several sons. One, who for years was a merchant in Northampton, Massachusetts, died a few months ago. Several are still living - one in Chicago and two (I think) in Sunderland, Mas. She taught for years but later has been Attendance Officer. She was a teacher when I visited them in 1911. Cousin Fanny was alive then. It was she who named me. I am wondering if you know some of the things that have happened in our family. Sister Ida died Sept 25, 1929 and her husband passed away April 1, 1935. Susa, Alf's first wife, died on Nov. 13, 1928 and he married a widow, Kathrine Minkler, on Sept 22, 1932. Josephine, Alf's older daughter, was married to Robert Homerick on October 25, 1925. They have one child, Helene States Homerick, born Dec. 23, 1927. Anita, Alf's younger child, was married to Clinton Heckelman on Nov. 26, 1932. They live in Fremont now. He drives a truck for the Red Star Line. Beth, Ida's youngest daughter, was married to Clifford Johns on Dec 1, 1920. He died very suddenly on Nov 27, 1932. His heart had been bad for some time and they knew the end might be sudden. He had a jewelry store in Berea, Ohio. Beth still runs the store. She is not well but has a lot of ambition and grit. Lizetta, the next older, was married to Chas. Watson on Dec 31, 1927. He was an elderly man and died on Nov. 27, 1934. Lizetta still runs the Ohio Cream Station, which was his business and also has an art shop. She has the latter before she married. She broke down as a teacher early in 1920 and never tried to teach after that - was ill for some time. You probably knew of the death of Geo. Knapp in 1926 - how he was murdered in Montana. Gertrude, the oldest of Ida's girls, is at home - is not well. The next, Cara, still teaches. Well, my paper is full, so I'll close for this time.
